Yeah that is a pain. I’m a little nervous but mostly positive about the game. Milan will be without Balotelli who is arguably their star because they only got him in January and he’s cup-tied, and like if both teams played to a level that showed the real gulf in quality between the sides it’d be like the Arsenal-Bayern game where Arsenal got spanked, but then in the CL more often than not we haven’t really been at our dazzling best versus Milan and they’ve played above themselves and been gritty and hustling and causing trouble and making the games a lot closer than they should be if you looked at just the quality of the two sides.

And I’m a little worried because except for Madrid this Tito side hasn’t played Big Teams yet and you could rip apart small teams but never really discover chinks in the armor and your real level until you play the big sides. Like Madrid over recent seasons with their tearing small teams consistently to shreds and being found out against big teams in the CL or United and City last season. So I guess we’ll get a bit of a test of our real standard post-Pep tonight, and I’m hoping it’s ruthless

Livescore.com says it’s 1.25am CET now and the game starts at 8.45pm CET. So that’s 19 hours and 20 minutes from now, it’s 11am now, so that’d be… 11pm + 7.20 more hours so something like 6.15am. Which is so much better a time, thank god

and 1am is actually a decent time i used to wake up for almost all the games back in malaysia when i had cable and i lived in the same time zone as you did. wait i’ll check the exact time- 2.45pm ET, so that’s i think 7.45pm GMT so that’s more like 3.30am your time and the much much better time of 6am my time i think. i’ll try look up the local time ones now

Trying to collect my thoughts on season 4 (I’m only up to 5x01 and I’ve only watched through it once and I’m just rambling a lot so maybe it won’t make sense and I wanted to see the opinions of more analytical people, but):

I found the inversion of what was said about Hell being a place where the pain and torture burns away your humanity bit by bit until you become something else in the actual trajectories of Dean and Sam over the season really interesting. Dean seems more human than ever, and Sam seems the one who buried part of his humanity with Dean. I think Sam’s increasing dependence on demonic blood and his subsequent changing nature represents that eroding of his humanity, and not as the cause- even though the demon blood in his veins might have done the rest of the eroding, the process began through Dean’s death and Sam subsequently closing off part of his humanity. That led him to it. So it was pretty literally a representation of how the road to demonic nature comes from losing your humanity, as everyone always talked about Hell doing. And I think Dean’s nature- and specifically the aspects of it that cause this fandom so much angst, like his lack of self-worth and propensity to self-blame and self-loathing- has a lot to do with why he never went down that path, because he never lost his humanity. Anna says that being human was feeling. (This view of being human and having a ‘soul’ is also very similar to Harry Potter and Buffy the Vampire Slayer, iirc). All through the year since Dean got back from Hell he was full of self-hatred and pain- he felt as intensely as he ever has, almost like feeling all that was his penance and something he deserved instead of justifying himself to himself. He didn’t shut it out. Other people would have shut it out. They would have stopped feeling or tried to stop feeling, self-justified themselves into an excuse enough to feel okay, jockeyed themselves into killing the part of themselves that felt so strongly. Killed part of their humanity.

And I think that’s the path to becoming a demon. Not the sheer pain and anguish, but how they dealt with it or respond to it- by killing off a part of themselves, the part that could feel the feelings of remorse and shame and horror and repulsion until they only have to deal with the horrible physical pain and torture of Hell as a demon. (This mirrors how Supernatural shows how spirits come to be- it’s not just a death that was violent or left behind unfinished business, it was how they responded to it, by pain and anguish turning them into something deadly and violent and less than the humans they were- in a way, something that tore out their sense of empathy or remorse, their humanity, to dull the pain and turned into vicious things nothing like the humans they once were). Dean couldn’t not keep on feeling because that’s who he is- he just doesn’t have the nature to justify his wrongs to himself and excuse himself for them, and he doesn’t have the nature to have forgiven himself, and he doesn’t have the nature to not constantly beat himself up for it. Dean had to keep on feeling, in a way he needed to keep on feeling all that pain as his own small penance for all the pain he was responsible for in Hell. He feels more than ever and that makes him more human than ever.

(I think this is also why Dean is a ‘righteous man’- he would never excuse himself anything or self-justify anything, not only because of his clear cut views on good and evil but because he doesn’t have enough self-worth to think any exceptions to a rule or any excuses are justified or justifiable for him- moral corruption begins and good starts to become evil when good starts to think they are an exception or that they are above the normal rules or that they deserve something above others, “it’s okay when we do this” or “I am better and I deserve this”, from Saruman to post-revolutionary governments that start acting like the oppressive elites they overthrew. Most of the time Dean doesn’t feel like he deserves anything.)

So it wasn’t Hell that made the Winchester brothers take differing directions of trajectories on the human-demon (soul-soulless, etc) spectrum, it was their decisions and judgements (though to be fair those judgements are influenced very directly by their respective personalities, which are innate…)

(Also I guess this says a lot about Sam’s love for Dean, even though it’s not something quite as overt and *visible* as Dean’s deal when Sam died. Dean in Hell had the thought of Sam being alive and okay in return for his fate. Sam only had the thought of his brother suffering impossible torture. And for him. That did to Sam, here on Earth, what we were all told was what Hell does to souls. That’s something. And that makes me have a lot of feelings in re Sam.)
